Can Dogs Talk?
We have all heard the Taco Bell dog and various computer animated dogs pitching products, but can dogs talk in real life. Most of you would probably say that dogs can't talk. But the answer to this question may not be as obvious as you might think.
After all, dogs are smart. And they have brains much larger than a parakeet. So why couldn't they learn to talk at least as well as your average bird?
Do talking dogs exist? I stumbled upon a number of sites and videos featuring talking dogs. Some of these dogs sound like they can really talk; others aren't that convincing. I'll let you be the judge.
Talking Dog Video
This is a collection of talking dog video clips featuring a number of different dogs. Mostly the dogs say "I Love You" or "I want my Mamma". The first few dogs aren't that impressive, but the last one speaks quite clearly.
Dog Sings I Love You
Waffles the singing Chihuahua sings "I love you Ma ma" . But he should stick to his day job. I don't think he would make it past the first Idol auditions.
Peter the Talking Italian Greyhound Dog
This dog definitely utters a number of phrases, but I get the impression it is just mimicking its master. If I were the dog I would get pretty sick of all the baby talk after a while.
Odie the Talking Dog
This is a video clip of yet another talking dog. Odie appeared on the David Letterman show and impressed everyone by saying "I Love You" to his owner.
My Own Talking Dog
Now might be a good time to come clean and admit that when I was a kid, I had a talking dog too. This was before camcorders were everywhere (which explains why I am not posting a video). Mine used to tell us when she was hungry and actually say "I'm hungry" and when she wanted to go out for a walk she would say "Let's Go!" And of course she would say "I Love You".
So I have always been a believer that some dogs can talk. I know most of you will be skeptical and think I must have been hallucinating, but oh well.

I have a 7 year old Labradoodle, that has been very vocal since puppy hood. Anyway,I think that he is just mimicking me,but I have to wonder sometimes.I taught him some phrases like... "I love you" but he has actually come up with a couple on his own. IE..."Where's Momma?"(he only says it when she's gone somewhere in "His" car) "I'm Hungry" "walk" as he hands me his leash and more. Maybe I'm just hearing what I want to, but other people agree to the point of being stunned when they hear him "talk". It's very amusing in public with strangers! Too... Funny! Who knows,If he is aware of what he says, But he certainly knows the results of saying "I'm Hungry"!Its kind of funny, he only says it when its dinner time or he see's some people food that he wants! No, I do not need to urge him on like these videos. All I know for sure is that he's smart and He's a great dog! I love him no matter whats going on. He's my best "Buddy"! I'll try to get some video, but he doesn't like anything pointed at him and I've had little success in capturing it on video.
I know that this goes against the prevailing view, but I do believe that some dogs do talk. Not all of them have this talent, and if you want to develop that talent you should not try to get them to repeat meaningless phrases like a parrot. Instead build on what he or she says spontaneously such as "i love you" by showing how happy and touched you are by it says. In time, it will seek your approval and praise by talking more spontaneously. I don't recommend giving treats - this kills any spontaneity.
Dogs that can talk will start blurting out little phrases about things that are important to them. I had a dog when I was a teenager that had about a 50 word vocabulary and she could string together pretty good 3 or 4 words sentences, usually when she was excited or very happy.
For example, when she wanted to go out or if she knew we were about to go out she would loudly say "let's go!". She would also say "I love you" or sometimes when she was just feeling affectionate she would say "love love love" over again. The words were unmistakable and clearly not barks or random growls, etc.
A lot of people would say that they are just making sounds without understanding what they are saying, but I think that this is just bias that prevents people from admitting that animals have their own intelligence. I hope you manage to capture your dog talking on video. If it doesn't like being filmed, I would suggest setting up the camera in a not so obvious place earlier in the day and then just interacting normally with your dog. Hopefully it will not be self conscious and say something on camera. You may have a lot of unrelated video captured as well but you can always edit that out.

I've seen other videos on this and it's truly amazing! Trying to teach our dogs to talk now, too :) ...so stay tuned for more videos!
